The Analysis on Mental Health of the Elderly in Korea

Abstract

|
The services of Mental health are insufficient to meet the social and psychological needs of various classes of the elderly in Korea. They want to be a human-being as a psychologic, social and valuable beings. To achieve their healthy life goals, it was strongly required for the governmental organizations and regional societies to help those elderly people.
The study subjects on this study are a relatively healthy elderly people who are living in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Choongnam province. Data were collected by self-administered questionnaires. The statistical significance was tested with a sample 251 elderly people by T-test or ANOVA.
As we can predict that we’ll have a severe old aged society, the depression and stress will be increased if the aged people are not satisfied with the needs of leasure. Also it will be a significant factor to the mental health of the aged. This issue should be one of the social main interesting things because it will affect to the safety and development of our community. The findings of this study suggests some implications to enhance the mental health of the aged as follows ;
First, it is desirable for the governmental organization and regional society to establish some facilities such as facility of education, of welfare, of leasure, of physical exercise, of culture, of counseling and of work which are useful for the aged. Second, a new trial is needed in structure, facility and function of the comfort room for the seniors. Third, the government should develop a supporting plan suitable for the character of the aged and the state of physical and mental health. Fourth, the aged people also have a keen interest to set up their own culture for keeping their health in good advance before having the time of later life.
